Rear Parking Brake Cables (Left and Right) Replacement

  1. Release the parking brake pedal fully.
  2. Remove the front door sill trim on both sides and the kick panels on both sides (see TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - DOOR AREAS ).
  3. Remove the center console (see CENTER CONSOLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  4. Remove the footrest (see step 2 under CARPET REPLACEMENT ).
  5. Pull back the carpet from the driver's footwell to access the parking brake cables.
  6. Remove the return spring (A), then disconnect both rear parking brake cables (B) from the equalizer (C).

  7. Remove the bolts (D) and wire guide base (E) holding the cables to the floor.
  8. Push the brake cables down through the cable access holes in the floor.
  9. Raise and support the vehicle.
  10. Remove the rear wheels.
  11. Remove all the parking brake cable mounting bolts.
  12. Remove the brake caliper bracket mounting bolts (A), then remove the caliper assembly (B) from the knuckle. To prevent damage to the caliper assembly or brake hose, use a short piece of wire to hang the caliper assembly from the undercarriage.
    NOTE: Do not twist the brake hose excessively.

  13. Remove the brake disc/drum flathead screws (A).

  14. Remove the brake disc/drum (B) from the hub bearing unit.
    NOTE:
    • If a disc/drum is stuck to the hub, remove the access plug (C), and turn the adjuster nut (D) with a flat tip screwdriver until the brake shoes are loose.
    • If a disc/drum is still stuck to the hub, thread two 8 x 1.25 mm bolts (E) into the disc/drum to push it away from the hub. Turn each bolt 90 degrees at a time to prevent the disc/drum from binding.
  15. Disconnect and remove the upper return springs (A), then remove the shoe guide plate.

  16. Release the tension pins (A) by pushing and turning the retainers (B).

  17. Remove the strut (A) and the rod spring (B).

  18. Lower the parking brake shoe assembly.
  19. Remove the forward brake shoe (A) and the adjuster assembly (B) by removing the lower return spring (C).

  20. Remove the rear brake shoe by disconnecting the parking brake cable (A) from the parking brake lever (B).
    NOTE: During installation, apply Molykote 44MA grease to the cable contact surface (C) on the backing plate.

  21. Remove the parking brake cable mounting bolts from the backing plate (A).

  22. Pull the parking brake cable (B) and remove it from the backing plate.
  23. Repeat for the other side.
  24. Install the new parking brake cables in the reverse order of removal.
    NOTE: Be careful not to bend or distort the cable.
  25. Adjust the parking brake (see PARKING BRAKE INSPECTION AND ADJUSTMENT  ).
    NOTE: Do the Major Adjustment first, apply the parking brake firmly 10 times, then do the Minor Adjustment again.
  26. Clean the mating surfaces between the disc/drum and the inside of the wheel, then install the rear wheels.
