Check the power steering hoses for improper attachment, leaks, cracks, damage, loose connections, chafing and deterioration.
- Run the engine between idle speed and 1,000 rpm. Make sure the temperature of the power steering fluid in the reservoir tank rises to 60° to 80°C (140° to 176°F).
- Turn the steering wheel right-to-left several times.
- Hold the steering wheel at each lock position for five seconds and carefully check for fluid leaks.CAUTION: Do not hold the steering wheel in a locked position for more than 15 seconds.
- If fluid leaks at the connectors is noted, loosen the flare nut and then retighten it.CAUTION: Do not overtighten the connector as this can damage the O-ring, washer, and connector.
- If fluid leaks from the power steering pump are noted, check the power steering oil pump. Refer to "INSPECTION AFTER DISASSEMBLY ".
- Check the steering gear boots for accumulation of power steering fluid indicating a steering gear leak.
