Valve Clearance: Adjusting
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Nissan Pathfinder. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
Adjust valve clearance while engine is cold.
Perform adjustment by selecting head thickness of valve lifter (Adjusting shims are not used).
- Remove camshaft.
- Remove valve lifter at location where measured value is outside standard.
- Measure center thickness of removed valve lifter with micrometer.
- Use equation below to calculate valve lifter thickness for replacement.
Valve lifter thickness calculation:
Thickness of replacement valve lifter = t1 + (C1 - C2)
t1 = Thickness of removed valve lifter
C1 = Measured valve clearance
C2 = Standard valve clearance:
Intake: 0.30 mm (0.012 in)
Exhaust: 0.33 mm (0.013 in)
- Thickness of new valve lifter can be identified by stamp mark on reverse side (inside cylinder).
- Available thickness of valve lifter (Factory setting):
7.88 - 8.40 mm (0.3102 - 0.3307 in) [in 0.02 mm (0.0008 in) step] in 27 sizes (Intake/Exhaust)
Refer to PRECAUTIONS .
- Install selected valve lifter.
- Install camshaft.
- Rotate crankshaft a few turns by hand.
- Confirm that valve clearance is within standard.
- After repair, confirm that valve clearance is within standard with engine warmed-up.
