Refilling Engine Coolant

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Sentra. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Install reservoir tank, radiator drain plug and cylinder block drain plug. Apply Thread Locking Sealant to the thread of cylinder block drain plug.
    • Use Genuine Medium Strength Thread Locking Sealant (Blue), or equivalent. Refer to RECOMMENDED CHEMICAL PRODUCTS AND SEALANTS .
  2. Close and tighten cylinder block drain plugs securely.

    Cylinder block drain plug: 7.8 - 11.8 N.m (0.8 - 1.2 kg-m, 69 - 104 in-lb)

  3. Fill the radiator and the reservoir tank to the specified level.

    • Use Genuine NISSAN Anti-Freeze Coolant or equivalent, mixed 50/50 with distilled water or demineralized water.
    • Pour coolant through coolant filler neck slowly of less than 2 l (2.1 qt.) a minute to allow air in system to escape.

      Engine coolant capacity: MT 6.1 l (6 1/2 qt.)

      (With reservoir tank) AT 6.0 l (6 3/8 qt.)

      Reservoir tank: 0.7 l (3/4 qt.)

  4. Warm up the engine to the normal operating temperature without the radiator cap installed.
    • If coolant overflows radiator filler hole, install filler cap.
  5. Run engine at 3,000 rpm for 10 seconds and return to idle speed with radiator cap installed.
    • Repeat two or three times.

Watch the coolant temperature gauge, do not overheat the engine.

  6. Stop the engine and cool it down to less than approximately 50°C(122°F).
    • Cool down using a fan to reduce the time.
    • If necessary, refill the radiator up to the filler neck with coolant.
  7. Refill the reservoir tank to the MAX level line with coolant.
  8. Repeat steps 5 through 7 two or more times with radiator cap installed until coolant level no longer drops.
  9. Check cooling system for leaks with the engine running.
  10. Warm up the engine, and check for the sound of coolant flow while running engine from idle up to 3,000 rpm with heater temperature controller set at several position between COOL and WARM.
    • Sound may be noticeable at heater unit.
  11. If sound is heard, bleed air from cooling system by repeating steps 5 through 7 until coolant level no longer drops.
    • Clean the excess coolant off of the engine.
