Driver-Side Air Bag Module & Spiral Cable: Removal

  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS  . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM  .
  2. Remove lower lid (access cover) from steering wheel. See Fig 1 . Disconnect air bag module connector. Remove side lids from steering wheel. On models equipped with Automatic Speed Control Device (ASCD) switch, remove switch. On all models, remove and discard air bag module Torx or hex-head bolts. Remove air bag module from steering wheel.
  3. Center steering wheel with front wheels in straight-ahead position. Disconnect horn connector. Remove steering wheel nut. Using appropriate steering wheel puller, remove steering wheel. DO NOT over tighten puller bolt on steering wheel.
  4. Remove upper and lower steering column covers. Disconnect spiral cable connector. Remove 4 screws from spiral cable. Remove spiral cable from steering column.
