Diagnostic Procedure (A/T)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Xterra and 2002 Nissan Frontier. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PNP relay harness connector located in front relay box on right side of engine compartment. Turn ignition on. Ensure transmission is in Park or Neutral. Measure voltage between ground and PNP relay harness connector terminal No. 2 (Yellow wire). See Fig 1 . If battery voltage exists, go to step  6 . If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PNP switch harness connector. See Fig 2 or Fig 3 . Check continuity of Yellow wire between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 2 and PNP relay harness connector terminal No. 2. Also check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem is found, repair as necessary. If problem is not found, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 1 (White/Black wire). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open or short between PNP switch and fuse No. 12 located in fuse block under left side of instrument panel.
  4. Check continuity between PNP switch connector terminals. Continuity should exist with transmission in Park or Neutral. Continuity should not exist with transmission in any other gear. If continuity is as specified, go to step  9 . If continuity is not as specified, go to next step.
  5. Adjust gearshift cable and repeat step  4 . If continuity is still not as specified, replace PNP switch.
  6. Turn ignition off. Check continuity between body ground and PNP relay harness connector terminals No. 1 and 6. See Fig 1 . Continuity should exist. Also, check circuits for short to voltage. If problem is found, repair as necessary. If problem is not found, go to next step.
  7. Disconnect ECM harness connector. See Figure or Figure . Check continuity of Blue/Black wire between PNP relay harness connector terminal No. 7 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 22. See Figure . Also, check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem is found, repair as necessary. If problem is not found, go to next step.
  8. Using jumper wires, apply battery voltage between PNP relay terminals No. 1 and 2. See Fig 1 . Check continuity between PNP relay terminals No. 3 and 5. Also check continuity between PNP relay terminals No. 6 and 7. Continuity should exist. Remove jumper wires. Continuity should not exist. If continuity is as specified, go to next step. If continuity is not as specified, replace PNP relay and retest system.
  9. No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
