Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Xterra and 2002 Nissan Frontier. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. If using CONSULT-II, go to next step. If not using CONSULT-II, go to step  3 .
  2. Turn ignition on. Turn EGRC solenoid valve ON and OFF in ACTIVE TEST mode with CONSULT-II. EGRC solenoid valve should click. For location, see Figure . If EGRC solenoid valve clicks, go to step  7 . If EGRC solenoid valve does not click, go to step  4 .
  3. Start engine. While quickly increasing engine speed to 3000 RPM, disconnect and reconnect EGRC solenoid valve harness connector. For location, see Figure . EGRC solenoid valve should click. If EGRC solenoid valve clicks, go to step  7 . If EGRC solenoid valve does not click, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect EGRC solenoid valve harness connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and EGRC solenoid valve harness connector terminal No. 2 (White/Green wire). If battery voltage exists, go to step  6 . If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
  5. Check the following:
    • Check fuse No. 13 (10-amp) located in fuse block under left side of instrument panel.
    • Check for poor connection at fuse block connector E49 terminal 3R (White/Green wire). See Figure .
    • Check for poor connection at Super Multiple Junction (SMJ) connector M65 terminal 18B (White/Green wire). See Figure . SMJ connector M65 is located under right side of instrument panel. See Figure or Figure .
    • Check for poor connection at White, 16-pin connector M59 terminal No. 6 (White/Green wire). See Figure . Connector M59 is located behind right side of instrument panel. See Figure or Figure .
    • Check for open or short between EGRC solenoid valve and fuse.

    Repair as necessary.

  6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM harness connector. See Figure or Figure . Check continuity of Green/White wire between EGRC solenoid valve harness connector terminal No. 1 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 103. Also, check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem is found, repair as necessary. If problem is not found, go to next step.
  7. Turn ignition off. Remove EGRC solenoid valve. See Figure . Using jumper wires, apply battery voltage between EGRC solenoid valve terminals. See Figure . Air should flow between ports "A" and "B". Air should not flow between ports "A" and "C". Remove jumper wires. Air should not flow between ports "A" and "B". Air should flow between ports "A" and "C". EGRC solenoid valve should switch in one second or less. If operation is as specified, go to next step. If operation is not as specified, replace EGRC solenoid valve.
  8. No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
