Diagnostic Procedure (2.4L)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Xterra and 2002 Nissan Frontier. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition off. Loosen and retighten engine ground bolts. See Figure . Disconnect CKP sensor harness connector. See Figure . Disconnect ECM harness connector. See Figure or Figure . Check continuity of Blue wire between CKP sensor harness connector terminal No. 2 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 47. See Figure . Also, check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem is found, go to next step. If problem is not found, go to step  3 .
  2. Check the following:
    • Check for poor connection at Gray, 9-pin connector E202 terminal No. 7 (Blue wire). See Figure . Connector E202 is located on right side of engine compartment. See Figure or Figure .
    • Check for poor connection at Gray, 3-pin connector F25 terminal No. 1 (Blue wire). Connector F25 is located in right rear of engine compartment. See Figure .
    • Check for open or short between CKP sensor and ECM.

    Repair as necessary.

  3. Reconnect ECM harness connector. Check continuity between engine ground and CKP sensor harness connector terminal No. 1 (Black/White wire). Continuity should exist. Also, check circuit for short to voltage. If problem is found, go to next step. If problem is not found, go to step  5 .
  4. Check the following:
    • Check for poor connection at Gray, 9-pin connector E202 terminal No. 6 (Black/White wire). See Figure . Connector E202 is located on right side of engine compartment. See Figure or Figure .
    • Check for poor connection at Gray, 3-pin connector F25 terminal No. 2 (Black/White wire). Connector F25 is located in right rear of engine compartment. See Figure .
    • Check for open or short between CKP sensor and ECM.

    Repair as necessary.

  5. Disconnect Gray, 9-pin connector E32 from connector E202 located on right side of engine compartment. See Figure or Figure . Check continuity between ground and connector E32 terminal No. 2. See Figure . Continuity should exist. Also, check circuit for short to voltage. If problem is found, go to next step. If problem is not found, go to step  7 .
  6. Check the following:
    • Check for poor connection at Gray, 3-pin connector F25 terminal No. 3. Connector F25 is located in right rear of engine compartment. See Figure .
    • Check Gray, 6-pin joint connector No. 1 (connector F31) located near ECM. See Figure . Continuity should exist between all terminals.
    • Check for open or short between connector E32 and engine ground.

    Repair as necessary.

  7. Loosen and retighten CKP sensor mounting bolt. Repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If 1st trip DTC is detected, go to next step. If 1st trip DTC is not detected, problem has been corrected.
  8. Remove CKP sensor. Visually inspect sensor for chipping. Measure resistance between sensor terminals. Resistance should be about 512-632 ohms at 68°F (20°C). Replace sensor if it is chipped or if resistance is not as specified. If sensor is okay, go to next step.
  9. Visually inspect flywheel or drive plate teeth for chipping. If chipping is found, replace flywheel or drive plate. If chipping is not found, go to next step.
  10. No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
