Diagnostic Procedure (3.3L)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Xterra and 2002 Nissan Frontier. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition off. Disconnect TP switch harness connector. See Figure . Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and TP switch harness connector terminal No. 5 (Black/Pink wire). If battery voltage exists, go to step  3 . If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
  2. Check the following:
    • Check fuse No. 27 (10-amp) located in fuse block under left side of instrument panel.
    • Check for poor connection at fuse block connector M27 terminal 8N (Light Blue wire). See Figure .
    • Check for poor connection at White, 18-pin connector M59 terminal No. 6 (Light Blue wire). See Figure . Connector M59 is located behind right side of instrument panel. See Figure or Figure .
    • Check for open or short between TP switch and fuse.

    Repair as necessary.

  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM harness connector. See Figure or Figure . Check continuity of Brown/White wire between TP switch harness connector terminal No. 4 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 28. See Figure . Also, check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem is found, repair as necessary. If problem is not found, go to next step.
  4. Reconnect all harness connectors. Adjust closed TP switch idle position by performing BASIC INSPECTION. See ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS article. If using CONSULT-II, go to next step. If not using CONSULT-II, go to step  7 .
  5. Start engine and warm to normal operating temperature. Select CLSD THL/P SW in DATA MONITOR mode with CONSULT-II. CLSD THL/P SW should indicate ON when throttle valve is completely closed and OFF when throttle valve is slightly open. If operation is as specified, go to next step. If operation is not as specified, adjust closed TP switch by performing BASIC INSPECTION. See ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS article. If adjustment is impossible, replace TP switch.
  6. Select DATA MONITOR mode with CONSULT-II. Observe THRTL POS SEN reading on CONSULT-II with throttle in specified positions. See appropriate TP SENSOR VOLTAGE table under DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE under DTC P0121, DTC P0122 OR DTC P0123: TP SENSOR. If voltage is as specified, go to step  9 . If voltage is not as specified, adjust TP sensor by performing BASIC INSPECTION. See ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS article. If voltage is still not as specified, replace TP sensor.
  7. Start engine and warm to normal operating temperature. Turn ignition off. Disconnect TP switch harness connector. Check continuity between TP switch terminals No. 4 and 5. When throttle valve is completely closed, continuity should exist. When throttle valve is partially open or completely open, continuity should not exist. If continuity is as specified, go to next step. If continuity is not as specified, adjust closed TP switch by performing BASIC INSPECTION. See ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS article. If adjustment is impossible, replace TP switch.
  8. CAUTION: DO NOT use ECM ground terminals when measuring voltage.
  9. Measure voltage between ground and ECM terminal No. 23 (TP sensor signal) by backprobing, with throttle in specified positions. See appropriate TP SENSOR VOLTAGE table. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, adjust TP sensor by performing BASIC INSPECTION. See ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS article. If voltage is still not as specified, replace TP sensor.
  10. No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
