Diagnostic Procedure (3.3L)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Xterra and 2002 Nissan Frontier. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition off. Disconnect appropriate HO2S1 harness connector. See Fig 1 . Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and appropriate HO2S1 harness connector terminal No. 1 (Orange/Black wire). If battery voltage exists, go to step  3 . If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
  2. Check the following:
    • Check fuse No. 14 (15-amp) located in fuse block under left side of instrument panel.
    • Check for poor connection at fuse block connector M26 terminal 12P (Orange/Black wire). See Figure .
    • Check for poor connection at White, 18-pin connector M59 terminal No. 14 (Orange/Black wire). See Figure . Connector M59 is located behind right side of instrument panel. See Figure or Figure .
    • Check for open or short between appropriate HO2S1 and fuse.

    Repair as necessary.

  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM harness connector. See Figure or Figure . On bank 1, check continuity of Brown/Yellow wire between HO2S1 harness connector terminal No. 3 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 119. See Figure . On bank 2, check continuity of Brown wire between HO2S1 harness connector terminal No. 3 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 121. Also, check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem is found, repair as necessary. If problem is not found, go to next step.
  4. Measure resistance between appropriate HO2S1 outer terminals. Resistance should be 2.3-4.3 ohms at 77°F (25°C). Check continuity between center terminal and each outer terminal. Continuity should not exist. If resistance and continuity are as specified, go to next step. If resistance or continuity is not as specified, replace HO2S1.
  5. No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
