Diagnostic Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Pathfinder and 2002 Infiniti QX4. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Turn ignition off. Loosen and retighten engine ground bolts. See Figure . Go to next step.
- Disconnect Gray, 8-pin in-line harness connector E135. In-line harness connector is located below power steering reservoir. See Figure . Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and in-line harness connector E135 terminal No. 6 (Black/White wire). See Figure . Voltage should equal battery voltage. Also, check circuits for short to ground or short to voltage. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists, go to step 4 .
- Check following:
- Check for poor, loose, corroded or damage to terminal connections in in-line harness connectors E132 and E135. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
- Check for open or short in circuits between ECM and CKP sensor (POS).
- Check for open or short in circuits between ECM relay and CKP sensor (POS).
- Turn ignition off. Check continuity between engine ground and in-line harness connector E135 terminal No. 1 (Black wire). Continuity should exist. Also, check circuit for short to voltage. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If problem is found, go to next step. If no problem is found, leave harness connector disconnected and go to step 6 .
- Check following:
- Check for poor, loose, corroded or damage to terminal connections in in-line harness connectors E132 and E135. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
- Check for poor, loose, corroded or damage to terminal connections in harness connectors E116 and M114.
- Check for poor, loose, corroded or damage to terminal connections in harness connectors M32 and F23.
- Check for open in Black wire between ground and CKP sensor (POS) harness connector terminal No. 1.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM 116-pin harness connector. For ECM location, see Figure . Check continuity of Yellow wire between ECM harness connector terminal No. 85 and in-line harness connector F23 terminal No. 16. See Figure . Also, check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
- Check for open between ECM and CKP sensor (POS).
- Disconnect CKP sensor (POS) 3-pin harness connector. For sensor location, see Fig 1
. Check continuity of specified circuits between CKP sensor (POS) and in-line harness connector E132. See CHECKING CKP SENSOR (POS) SUB-HARNESS CIRCUITS
table. See Figure
and Figure
. Also, check harness for short to ground or short to power. If no problem is found, leave harness connector disconnected and go to next step. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST
.CHECKING CKP SENSOR (POS) SUB-HARNESS CIRCUITS
Crankshaft Position Sensor (POS) Harness Connector Terminal No. In-Line Harness Connector E132 Terminal No. 1 1 2 5 3 6 - Loosen and retighten CKP sensor (POS) retaining bolt. Reconnect any disconnected harness connectors. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST . If 1st trip DTC P1336 is detected, go to next step. If 1st trip DTC P1336 is not detected, go to step 15 .
- Disconnect CKP sensor (POS) 3-pin harness connector. Remove CKP sensor (POS) retaining bolt. Remove CKP sensor (POS). Visually check CKP sensor for damage or chipping to sensor pick-up. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, replace CKP sensor. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
- Reconnect all harness connectors. Turn ignition on. Backprobbing at ECM, measure voltage between ground and ECM terminal No. 85 (Yellow wire). While monitoring voltmeter, briefly touch CKP sensor core with a flat-bladed tool. About 5 volts should exist when screwdriver is contacting sensor core. Voltage should drop to zero volts when screwdriver is quickly pulled away. There should be a steady 5 volts when screwdriver is slowly pulled away. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, replace CKP sensor (POS). After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect Gray, 8-pin in-line harness connector E135. In-line harness connector is located below power steering reservoir. See Figure . Check continuity between engine ground and in-line harness connector E135 terminal No. 2. See Figure . Continuity should exist. Also check circuit for short to voltage. If problem is found, go to next step. If no problem is found, go to step 15 .
- Check for open in circuits between ground and in-line harness connector E135.
- Visually check signal plate for chipping or damaged gear tooth. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, replace signal plate (flywheel). After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
- No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
