Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Pathfinder and 2002 Infiniti QX4. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition off. Loosen and retighten engine ground bolts. See Figure . Go to next step.
  2. Disconnect CKP (REF) 2-pin harness connector. Disconnect ECM 116-pin harness connector. For ECM location, see Figure . Turn ignition on. Check continuity of Blue/Green wire between ECM harness connector terminal No. 75 and CKP sensor (REF) harness connector No. 2. See Figure . Continuity should exist. Also, check circuits for short to ground or short to voltage. If problem is found, go to next step. If no problem is found, leave harness connectors disconnected and go to step  4 .
  3. Check following:
    • Check for poor, loose, corroded or damage to terminal connections in in-line harness connectors E132 and E135. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
    • Check for poor, loose, corroded or damage to terminal connections in in-line harness connectors E116 and M114.
    • Check for poor, loose, corroded or damage to terminal connections in in-line harness connectors F23 and M32.
    • Check for open or short in circuits between ECM and CKP sensor (REF).
If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, repeat appropriate DTC confirmation test.
  4. Turn ignition off. Check continuity between engine ground and CKP sensor (REF) harness connector terminal No. 1 (Black wire). Continuity should exist. Also, check circuit for short to voltage. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If problem is found, go to next step. If no problem is found, leave harness connector disconnected and go to step  6 .
  5. Check following:
    • Check for poor, loose, corroded or damage to terminal connections in in-line harness connectors E132 and E135. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
    • Check for poor, loose, corroded or damage to terminal connections in harness connectors E116 and M114.
    • Check for poor, loose, corroded or damage to terminal connections in in-line harness connectors F23 and M32.
    • Check for open in Black wire between ground and CKP sensor (REF).
If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, repeat appropriate DTC confirmation test.
  6. Remove CKP sensor (REF) retaining bolt. Remove CKP sensor. Visually check CKP sensor for damage or chipping to sensor pick-up. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, replace CKP sensor. After repair, repeat appropriate DTC confirmation test.
  7. Measure resistance between CKP sensor (REF) terminals No. 1 and 2. Resistance should be 470-570 ohms @ 68°F (20°C). If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace CKP sensor (REF). After repair, repeat appropriate DTC confirmation test.
  8. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Gray, 8-pin in-line harness connector E135. For harness connector location, see Figure . Check continuity between engine ground and connector E135 terminal No. 7. See Figure . Continuity should exist. Also check circuit for short to voltage. If problem is found, go to next step. If no problem is found, go to step  10 .
  9. Check following:
    • Check for poor, loose, corroded or damage to terminal connections in in-line harness connectors E132 and E135. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
    • Check for poor, loose, corroded or damage to terminal connections in harness connectors E116 and M114.
    • Check for poor, loose, corroded or damage to terminal connections in harness connectors M32 and F23.
    • Check for open in Black wire between ground and in-line harness connector F23 terminal No.19.
If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, repeat appropriate DTC confirmation test.
  10. No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
