WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Pathfinder and 2002 Infiniti QX4. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
Use the following test to check overall function of cooling fan. During this test, 1st trip DTC may not be confirmed.
- Allow engine to cool. Check coolant level and mixture ratio in radiator and reservoir tank. If coolant level and ratio are okay, go to next step. If coolant level is low, go to DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE . If coolant ratio is out of range, drain and fill coolant with a 45-55 percent coolant to water ratio.
- Ask customer if coolant was added. If coolant was added, go to DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE . If coolant was not added, go to next step.
- Start engine and allow to idle. Ensure that cooling fan operates. If fan operates, go to next step. If fan does not operate, go to DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE .
- Check A/C operation. If A/C shuts off, go to next step. If A/C does not shut off, go to DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE .
- Check for clogged or blocked coolant passages. Start engine and warm to normal operating temperature. Being careful not to touch moving parts, grasp upper and lower radiator hoses, and ensure that coolant flows. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, go to DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE .
- Check for blocked radiator passages. Check aftermarket installed fog lights blocking radiator, cooling fan or blocked condenser. Check for damage to front-end cover, damage to radiator grill or bumper. If problem is found, repair as necessary. If no problem is found, go to next step.
- Check ECT operation. Use testing procedure in DTC P0117 OR P0118 . If problem is found, repair as necessary. If no problem is found, go to next step.
- Check ignition timing. See THROTTLE POSITION SWITCH, IGNITION TIMING & IGNITION SYSTEM in ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS article. If problem is found, adjust timing and recheck cooling system.
