Diagnostic Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Pathfinder and 2002 Infiniti QX4. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- If using CONSULT-II, go to next step. If using generic scan tool, go to step 3 .
- Start engine and warm to normal operating temperature. Perform TARGET INT/V TIM in ACTIVE TEST mode with CONSULT-II. Touch Up and Down on CONSULT-II while holding engine speed between 1500 and 2500 RPM. If intake valve angle does not change as commanded, go to step 4 . If intake valve angle changes as commanded, go to step 8 .
- Turn ignition off. Remove suspect IVTC solenoid valve. See Fig 2 or Fig 3 . Connect battery voltage and ground to IVTC solenoid valve. See Fig 1 . IVTC should click when voltage is applied. If IVTC solenoid valve does not operate as specified, go to next step. If IVTC solenoid valve operates as specified, go to step 8 .
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect appropriate IVTC solenoid valve 2-pin harness connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and IVTC solenoid valve harness connector terminal No. 1 (Red/Yellow wire). If battery voltage does not exists, go to next step. If battery voltage exists, go to step 6 .
- Check following:
- Check for poor, loose, corroded or damaged terminal connections in in-line harness connectors F23 and M 32. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
- Check fuse block fuse No. 16 (10-amp).
- Check continuity of circuit between fuse and suspect IVTC solenoid valve.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM 116-pin harness connector. For ECM location, see Figure . Check continuity of Orange/Black wire between Bank 1 IVTC solenoid valve harness connector terminal No. 2 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 13, or Pink/Blue wire between Bank 2 IVTC solenoid valve harness connector terminal No. 2 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 15. See Figure and Fig 1 . Also check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST . If no problem is found, go to next step.
- Measure resistance between IVTC solenoid valve terminals No. 1 and 2 (component side). Resistance should be 5.5-9.2 ohms at 68°F (20°C). Check continuity between ground and IVTC solenoid valve terminals one at a time. Continuity should not exist. If resistance and continuity are as specified, go to next step. If resistance or continuity is not as specified, replace IVTC solenoid and retest system. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
- No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
