Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Pathfinder and 2002 Infiniti QX4. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition off. Disconnect fuel level sensor/pump unit 4-pin harness connector. Fuel level sensor/pump unit is located behind access cover, located under rear seat. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and fuel pump assembly harness connector terminal No. 3 (Yellow/Purple wire). See Fig 1 . If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists, leave harness connector disconnected and go to step  3 .
  2. Check the following:
    • Check for poor, loose, corroded or damaged terminal connections in in-line harness connector B1 and M2. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
    • Check for open or short between fuel level sensor and instrument cluster.
If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  3. Turn ignition off. Check continuity between body ground and fuel pump assembly harness connector terminal No. 2 (Black wire). Continuity should exist. Also, check circuit for short to voltage. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM 116-pin harness connector. For ECM location, see Figure . Backprobbing at ECM, check continuity of following:
    • Yellow/Purple wire between fuel level sensor/fuel pump unit harness connector terminal No. 3 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 83.
    • Black wire between fuel level sensor/fuel pump harness connector terminal No. 2 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 59.
See Figure and Fig 1 . Continuity should exist at each measurement. Also, check circuits for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem is found, go to next step. If no problem is found, go to step  6 .
  5. Check the following:
    • Check for poor, loose, corroded or damaged terminal connections in in-line harness connector B1 and M1. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
    • Check for poor, loose, corroded or damaged terminal connections in in-line harness connector F27 and M94.
    • Check for open or short between ECM and fuel level sensor.
If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  6. Check fuel level sensor. For testing procedure, see FUEL SYSTEM in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, replace fuel level sensor. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  7. No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
