Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Pathfinder and 2002 Infiniti QX4. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition switch to START position. If engine cranks, go to next step. If engine does not crank, repair starting system. See appropriate STARTERS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS.
  2. Turn ignition off. Loosen and retighten 2 engine ground bolts. See Figure . After repair, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM 116-pin harness connector. ECM is located behind instrument panel lower cover. See Figure . Disconnect CMP sensor (PHASE) 2-pin harness connector. CMP sensor (PHASE) is located on front engine cover facing the camshaft sprocket. See Fig 1 . Check continuity of Blue wire between ECM harness connector terminal No. 76 and CMP sensor (PHASE) harness connector terminal No. 2. See Figure . Continuity should exist. Also, check circuit for short to ground or short to voltage. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair as necessary and retest system.
  4. Check continuity of Black/White wire between ground and CMP sensor (PHASE) harness connector terminal No. 1. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Continuity should exist. Also, check circuit for short to voltage. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair as necessary and retest system.
  5. Loosen and remove CMP sensor (PHASE) retaining bolt. Remove sensor. Visually check CMP sensor for damage or chipping to sensor pick-up. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, replace CMP sensor (PHASE).
  6. Connect DVOM to CMP sensor pins (component side). Measure resistance between CMP sensor pins. Resistance should be as follows:
    • For Hitachi CMP sensor, resistance should be 1440-1760 ohms at 68°F (20°C).
    • For Mitsubishi CMP sensor, resistance should be 2090-2550 ohms at 68°F (20°C).
If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace CMP sensor.
  7. No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
