Diagnostic Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Pathfinder and 2002 Infiniti QX4. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Remove access cover under rear seat. Disconnect fuel level sensor/pump 4-pin harness connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and fuel level sensor/pump harness connector terminal No. 1 (Green/Black wire). See Figure . Voltage should be about 5 volts. If voltage is as specified, go to step 3 . If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
- Check for poor, loose, corroded or damage to terminal connections in in-line harness connectors. Check for open or shorts between ECM and fuel level sensor/pump unit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If problem is found, repair as necessary.
- Turn ignition off. Check for continuity between ground and fuel level sensor/pump unit terminal No. 2 (Black wire). See Figure . Also, check circuit for short to voltage. If problem is found, repair as necessary. If no problem is found, go to next step.
- Remove fuel level sensor/pump assembly. See FUEL SYSTEM in REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. Access cover is located under rear seat. Measure resistance between fuel level sensor/pump unit harness connector terminals No. 1 and 2, with FTT sensor submerged in heated water. See Figure . Resistance should be within acceptable range shown in illustration. See Figure . If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace fuel level sensor/pump unit.
- No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
