Fail Safe Mode

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Pathfinder and 2002 Infiniti QX4. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

When this malfunction is detected, ECM enters fail safe mode. MIL illuminates and ECM determines engine coolant temperature based on elapsed time since ignition was turned on, or engine was started. ECM raises engine coolant temperature input based on engine run time. When ignition is first turned on temperature displayed on CONSULT-II should be 104°F (40°C). After 4 minutes, temperature should display as 176°F (80°C).
