Procedure "B"

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Quest. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition off. Remove cooling fan relays No. 2 and 3. See Figure. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminals No. 1 (Blue wire) and No. 5 (no color available) at cooling fan relays No. 2 and 3 harness connectors. See Figure. If battery voltage exists at both terminals, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist at both terminals, repair open or short in appropriate circuit and retest system. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect cooling fan motor harness connector. Check continuity of Blue/Red wire between terminal No. 1 at cooling fan motor harness connector and terminal No. 3 at cooling fan relays No. 2 and 3 harness connectors. See Figure and Figure . Also, check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. Repair circuit as necessary and retest system. If circuit is okay, go to next step.
  3. Disconnect ECM harness connector. See Figure. Check continuity of Brown/White wire between terminal No. 2 at cooling fan relays No. 2 and 3 harness connectors and terminal No. 36 at ECM harness connector. See Figure and Figure . Also, check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. Repair circuit as necessary and retest system. If circuit is okay, go to next step.
NOTE: Perform step  4 for both cooling fan relays No. 2 and 3.
  4. Using fused jumper wires, apply battery voltage between cooling fan relay No. 1 terminals No. 1 and 2 (component side). See Figure. Continuity should exist between terminals No. 3 and 5. Remove jumper wires. Continuity should not exist between terminals No. 3 and 5. If continuity is as specified, go to next step. If continuity is not as specified, replace cooling fan relay No. 1 and retest system.
  5. Using fused jumper wires, connect positive battery voltage to cooling fan motor terminal No. 2 and ground terminal No. 3. See Figure. Fan should operate at low speed. Using an additional jumper wire, apply positive battery voltage to cooling fan motor terminal No. 1. Fan should operate at high speed. If fan operates as specified, go to next step. If fan does not operate as specified, replace cooling fan motor and retest system.
  6. No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
