Procedure "A"
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Quest. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Turn ignition off. Reconnect all harness connectors. Remove cooling fan relay No. 1. See Figure. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and cooling fan relay No. 1 harness connector terminals No. 1 (Blue wire) and No. 5 (White/Blue wire). See Fig 1. If battery voltage exists at both terminals, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist at both terminals, repair open or short circuit and retest system. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect cooling fan motor harness connector. Check continuity of Blue/White wire between cooling fan relay No. 1 harness connector terminal No. 3 and cooling fan motor harness connector terminal No. 2. See Fig 1 and Fig 2 . Check continuity between ground and cooling fan motor harness connector terminal No. 3 (Black wire). Continuity should exist. Also, check circuits for short to ground and short to voltage. Repair circuit(s) as necessary and retest system. If both circuits are okay, go to next step.
- Disconnect ECM harness connector. See Figure. Check continuity of Blue/Orange wire between cooling fan relay No. 1 harness connector terminal No. 2 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 38. See Figure and Fig 1 . Also, check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. Repair circuit as necessary and retest system. If circuit is okay, go to next step.
- Using fused jumper wires, apply battery voltage between cooling fan relay No. 1 terminals No. 1 and 2 (component side). See Fig 1. Continuity should exist between terminals No. 3 and 5. Remove jumper wires. Continuity should not exist between terminals No. 3 and 5. If continuity is as specified, go to next step. If continuity is not as specified, replace cooling fan relay No. 1 and retest system.
- Using fused jumper wires, connect positive battery voltage to cooling fan motor terminal No. 2 and ground terminal No. 3. See Fig 2. Fan should operate at low speed. Using an additional jumper wire, apply positive battery voltage to cooling fan motor terminal No. 1. Fan should operate at high speed. If fan operates as specified, go to next step. If fan does not operate as specified, replace cooling fan motor and retest system.
- No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
