Diagnostic Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Sentra. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Attempt to start vehicle. If starter operates properly, go to next step. If starter does not operate properly, repair starter as necessary. See appropriate STARTERS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS.
- Turn ignition off. Loosen and retighten engine ground bolts. See Figure and Figure . Disconnect CMP sensor connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and CMP sensor harness connector terminal No. 1 (Red/Green wire). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open or short in Red/Green wire between CMP sensor and ECM relay. See 2.5L under ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS in ELECTRICAL.
- Check continuity between engine ground and CMP sensor harness connector terminal No. 3 (Black wire). Continuity should exist. Also, check circuit for short to voltage. Repair circuit as necessary and retest system. If circuit is okay, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM harness connector. See Figure. On vehicles with NVIS system, check continuity of Red wire between CMP sensor harness connector terminal No. 2 and ECM harness connector terminals No. 62. See Figure. On vehicles without NVIS system, check continuity of Red wire between CMP sensor harness connector terminal No. 2 and ECM harness connector terminals No. 71. Continuity should exist. On all vehicles, also check circuits for short to ground and short to voltage. Repair circuit(s) as necessary and retest system. If circuits are okay, go to next step.
- Remove CMP sensor and inspect for damage. If CMP sensor is undamaged, go to next step. If sensor is damaged replace as necessary and retest system.
- Visually inspect intake camshaft. Check for accumulation of debris to the signal plate on rear end of camshaft. Check for chipping of signal plate. Clean debris away from signal plate, or replace camshaft and retest. If camshaft is Okay, go to next step.
- No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLESHOOTING - NO CODES article.
