Procedure "B"

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Sentra. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition off. Remove cooling fan relays No. 2 and 3. See Figure. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminals No. 1 (Brown wire) and No. 3 (Green wire on cooling fan relay No. 2; Blue/White wire on cooling fan relay No. 3) at cooling fan relays No. 2 and 3 harness connectors. See Figure. If battery voltage exists at both terminals, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist at both terminals, repair open or short in appropriate circuit and retest system. See 2.5L under COOLING SYSTEM under SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS under WIRING DIAGRAMS in ELECTRICAL article.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect both cooling fan motor harness connectors located on fan shrouds. Check continuity of Blue/Black wire between cooling fan relay No. 3 harness connector terminal No. 5 and left cooling fan motor harness connector terminal No. 2. See Figure and Figure . Check continuity between ground and cooling fan relay No. 3 harness connector terminal No. 7 (Black wire). Check continuity of Yellow/Black wire between cooling fan relay No. 3 harness connector terminal No. 6 and left cooling fan motor harness connector terminal No. 3. Check continuity of Green/Yellow wire between cooling fan relay No. 2 harness connector terminal No. 5 and right cooling fan motor harness connector terminal No. 2. Check continuity between ground and cooling fan relay No. 2 harness connector terminal No. 7 (Black wire). Check continuity of White/Blue wire between cooling fan relay No. 2 harness connector terminal No. 6 and right cooling fan motor harness connector terminal No. 3. Continuity should exist in all checks. Also, check circuits for short to ground and short to voltage. Repair circuit(s) as necessary and retest system. If all circuits are okay, go to next step.
  3. Disconnect ECM harness connector. See Figure. Check continuity of Light Green/Black wire between cooling fan relays No. 2 and 3 harness connectors terminal No. 2 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 27. See Figure and Figure . Continuity should exist. Also, check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. Repair circuit as necessary and retest system. If circuit is okay, go to next step.
  4. NOTE: Perform step  4 for both cooling fan relays No. 2 and 3.
  5. Using fused jumper wires, apply battery voltage between cooling fan relay terminals No. 1 and 2. See Figure. Continuity should exist between terminals No. 3 and 5, and between terminals No. 6 and 7. Remove jumper wires. Continuity should not exist between terminals No. 3 and 5, or between terminals No. 6 and 7. If continuity is as specified, go to next step. If continuity is not as specified, replace appropriate cooling fan relay and retest system.
  6. Using fused jumper wires, connect positive battery voltage to terminal No. 1 and ground terminal No. 4 at each cooling fan motor connector (component side). See Figure. Fan should operate at low speed. Using additional jumper wires, apply battery voltage to terminal No. 2 and ground to terminal No. 3. Fan should operate at high speed. If fan operates as specified, go to next step. If fan does not operate as specified, replace appropriate cooling fan motor and retest system.
  7. No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLESHOOTING - NO CODES article.
