Procedure "A"
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Sentra. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Turn ignition off. Reconnect all harness connectors. Remove cooling fan relay No. 1. See Figure. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and cooling fan relay No. 1 harness connector terminals No. 1 (Green/White wire), No. 3 (Green wire) and No. 6 (Blue/White wire). See Fig 1. If battery voltage exists at all terminals, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist at any terminal, repair circuit and retest system. See 2.5L under COOLING SYSTEM under SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS in ELECTRICAL.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect both cooling fan motor harness connectors located on fan shrouds. Check continuity of Green/Red wire between cooling fan relay No. 1 harness connector terminal No. 7 and left cooling fan motor harness connector terminal No. 1. See Fig 1 and Fig 2 . Continuity should exist. Check continuity between ground and left cooling fan motor harness connector terminal No. 4 (Black wire). Continuity should exist. Check continuity of Yellow wire between cooling fan relay No. 1 harness connector terminal No. 5 and right cooling fan motor harness connector terminal No. 1. Continuity should exist. Check continuity between ground and right cooling fan motor harness connector terminal No. 4 (Black wire). Continuity should exist. Also, check circuits for short to ground and short to voltage. Repair circuit(s) as necessary and retest system. If all circuits are okay, go to next step.
- Disconnect ECM harness connector. See Figure. Check continuity of Light Green/Red wire between cooling fan relay No. 1 harness connector terminal No. 2 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 37. See Figure and Fig 1 . Continuity should exist. Also, check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. Repair circuit as necessary and retest system. If circuit is okay, go to next step.
- Using fused jumper wires, apply battery voltage between cooling fan relay No. 1 terminals No. 1 and 2 (component side). See Fig 3. Continuity should exist between terminals No. 3 and 5, and between terminals No. 6 and 7. Remove jumper wires. Continuity should not exist between terminals No. 3 and 5, or between terminals No. 6 and 7. If continuity is as specified, go to next step. If continuity is not as specified, replace cooling fan relay No. 1 and retest system.
- Using fused jumper wires, connect positive battery voltage to terminal No. 1 and ground terminal No. 4 at each cooling fan motor connector (component side). See Fig 2. Fan should operate at low speed. Using additional jumper wires, apply battery voltage to terminal No. 2 and ground to terminal No. 3. Fan should operate at high speed. If fan operates as specified, go to next step. If fan does not operate as specified, replace appropriate cooling fan motor and retest system.
- No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See TESTING PROCEDURE under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
NOTE:
Cooling fan relays are all the same type (2M-2 Make) and can be tested using the same procedure.
