Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Sentra. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: For circuit wiring diagram, see Fig 1 . For connector identification and locations, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  .

  1. Check Hose

Check EVAP-CSPS hose for clogging, leak, kink, disconnection or improper connection. See Figure . If problem is found, repair as necessary. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair. If problem is not found, go to next step.
  2. Retighten Ground Screws

Turn ignition off. Loosen and retighten engine ground screws. See Figure . Go to next step.
  3. Check Connector

Disconnect EVAP-CSPS harness connector. Check connector for water. If water exists, repair or replace harness connector as necessary. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair. If water does not exist, go to next step.
  4. Check Power Supply

Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and EVAP-CSPS harness connector terminal No. 1. See Fig 1 . If voltage is about 5 volts, go to step  6 . If voltage is not about 5 volts, go to next step.
  5. Detect Malfunctioning Part

    Check the following:
    • Harness connectors B1 and M14.
    • Harness connectors M59 and F27.
    • Joint connector No. 2.
    • Harness for open or short between EVAP-CSPS and ECM.

Repair as necessary. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair.

  6. Check Ground Circuit

Turn ignition off. Check continuity between engine ground and EVAP-CSPS harness connector terminal No. 3. Continuity should exist. Also, check harness for short to power. If problem is found, go to next step. If problem is not found, go to step  8 .
  7. Detect Malfunctioning Part

    Check the following:
    • Harness connectors B1 and M14.
    • Harness connectors M59 and F27.
    • Joint connector No. 3.
    • Harness for open or short between EVAP-CSPS and ECM.
    • Harness for open or short between EVAP-CSPS and Transmission Control Module (TCM).

Repair as necessary. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair.

  8. Check Input Signal Circuit

Disconnect ECM harness connector. See Figure . Check continuity between EVAP-CSPS harness connector terminal No. 2 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 84. Also, check harness for short to ground and short to power. If problem is found, go to next step. If problem is not found, go to step  10 .
  9. Detect Malfunctioning Part

    Check the following:
    • Harness connectors B1 and M14.
    • Harness connectors M59 and F27.
    • Harness for open or short between EVAP-CSPS and ECM.

Repair as necessary. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair.

  10. Check EVAP-CPVCSV

If not using CONSULT-II, go to next step. If using CONSULT-II, start engine. Perform PURG VOL CONT/V in ACTIVE TEST mode with CONSULT-II. Engine speed should vary according to valve opening. If operation is as specified, go to step  12 . If operation is not as specified, go to next step.
  11. Check EVAP-CPVCSV

Turn ignition off. Remove EVAP-CPVCSV. See Figure . Using jumper wires, apply battery voltage to EVAP-CPVCSV terminals. See Figure . Air should flow between ports "A" and "B". Remove jumper wires. Air should not flow. If operation is as specified, go to next step. If operation is not as specified, replace EVAP-CPVCSV. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair.
  12. Check EVAP-CVCV Hose

Disconnect hose connected to EVAP-CVCV. Check hose for clogging. If problem is found, repair as necessary. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair. If problem is not found, go to next step.
  13. Check EVAP-CVCV

Check EVAP-CVCV as shown in illustration. See Figure . If EVAP-CVCV is okay, go to next step. If EVAP-CVCV is not okay, replace EVAP-CVCV. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair.
  14. Check EVAP-CSPS

Check EVAP-CSPS as shown in illustration. See Figure . If EVAP-CSPS is okay, go to next step. If EVAP-CSPS is not okay, replace EVAP-CSPS. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair.
  15. Check Water Separator

Check water separator as shown in illustration. See Figure . If water separator is okay, go to next step. If water separator is not okay, replace water separator. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair.
  16. Check If EVAP Canister Is Saturated With Water

Remove EVAP canister with EVAP-CVCV attached. Attempt to drain water from EVAP canister. If water does not drain from EVAP canister, go to step  19 . If water drains from EVAP canister, go to next step.
  17. Check EVAP Canister

Weigh EVAP canister with EVAP-CVCV attached. If weight is 4.0 lbs. (1.8 kg) or more, go to next step. If weight is less than 4.0 lbs. (1.8 kg), go to step  19 .
  18. Detect Malfunctioning Part

Inspect EVAP canister for damage. Also, check hose between water separator and EVAP canister for blockage or poor connection. If problem is found, repair as necessary. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair. If problem is not found, go to next step.
  19. Check For Intermittent

Check for intermittent condition. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair.
