Diagnostic Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Sentra. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- If using CONSULT-II, go to next step. If not using CONSULT-II, go to step 4 .
- Check Cooling Fan Low Speed Operation (With CONSULT-II)
Remove cooling fan relay No. 2. See Fig 1 . Turn ignition on. Select COOLING FAN in ACTIVE TEST mode with CONSULT-II. If cooling fans operate at low speed, go to next step. If cooling fans do not operate at low speed, go to COOLING FAN LOW SPEED CIRCUIT . - Check Cooling Fan High Speed Operation (With CONSULT-II)
Turn ignition off. Install cooling fan relay No. 2. Turn ignition on. Select COOLING FAN in ACTIVE TEST mode with CONSULT-II. If cooling fan No. 1 operates at high speed, go to step 6 . If cooling fan No. 1 does not operate at high speed, go to COOLING FAN HIGH SPEED CIRCUIT . - Check Cooling Fan Low Speed Operation (Without CONSULT-II)
Remove cooling fan relay No. 2. See Fig 1 . Start engine and let it idle. Turn A/C and blower on. If cooling fans operate at low speed, go to next step. If cooling fans do not operate at low speed, go to COOLING FAN LOW SPEED CIRCUIT . - Check Cooling Fan High Speed Operation (Without CONSULT-II)
Turn ignition off. Install cooling fan relay No. 2. Turn A/C and blower off. Disconnect ECT sensor harness connector. See Figure . Connect a 150 ohm resistor between ECT sensor harness connector terminals. Start engine. If cooling fan No. 1 operates at high speed, go to next step. If cooling fan No. 1 does not operate at high speed, go to COOLING FAN HIGH SPEED CIRCUIT . - Check Cooling System For Leak
Pressure test cooling system and radiator cap. Check thermostat operation. Radiator cap relief pressure should be 8.6-14.2 psi (59-98 kPa). Thermostat opening temperature should be 180°F (82°C). If problem is found, repair as necessary. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST (OVERALL FUNCTION CHECK) to verify repair. If problem is not found, go to next step. - Check ECT Sensor
Check ECT sensor as shown in illustration. See Figure . If ECT sensor is not okay, replace ECT sensor. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST (OVERALL FUNCTION CHECK) to verify repair. If ECT sensor is okay, go to next step. - Check Main 12 Causes
Check for other possible causes of engine overheating. See Fig 2 . If problem is found, repair as necessary. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST (OVERALL FUNCTION CHECK) to verify repair. If problem is not found, test is complete.
