DTC P1217: Engine Over Temperature: Description

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Maxima and 2002 Infiniti I35. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

The ECM controls the cooling fan corresponding to the vehicle speed, engine coolant temperature, refrigerant pressure and A/C ON signal. The control system has 3-step control (high/low/off). See Fig 1 . When the cooling fan or another component in the cooling system malfunctions, engine coolant temperature will rise. When the engine coolant reaches an abnormally high temperature, a malfunction is detected.
