Diagnostic Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Maxima and 2002 Infiniti I35. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect fuel pump assembly harness connector located behind access cover, under rear seat. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and fuel pump assembly harness connector terminal No. 2 (Green wire). See Figure . If battery voltage exists, go to step 3 . If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Check the following:
- Check for poor connection at White, 18-pin connector M6 terminal No. 6 (Green wire). See Figure . Connector M6 is located under left side of instrument panel. See Figure or Figure .
- Check for open or short between fuel level sensor and instrument cluster. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
Repair as necessary.
- Turn ignition off. Check continuity between body ground and fuel pump assembly harness connector terminal No. 5 (Black wire). Continuity should exist. Also, check circuit for short to voltage. If problem is found, repair as necessary. If problem is not found, go to next step.
- Disconnect ECM harness connector. See Figure
. Check continuity of the following:
- Green wire between fuel level sensor and fuel pump harness connector terminal No. 2 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 69.
- Black wire between fuel level sensor and fuel pump harness connector terminal No. 5 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 78.
See Figure . Also, check circuits for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem is found, go to next step. If problem is not found, go to step 6 .
- Check the following:
- Check for poor connection at White, 18-pin harness connector F66 (on I35) or F68 (on Maxima) terminals No. 7 (Black wire) and No. 8 (Green wire). See Figure . Connector is located under instrument panel. See Figure or Figure .
- Check for poor connection at White, 18-pin connector M6 terminal No. 6 (Green wire). See Figure . Connector M6 is located under left side of instrument panel. See Figure or Figure .
- Check for open or short between fuel level sensor and ECM.
- On I35 only, check for poor connection at White, 16-pin connector M110 terminal No. 6 (Black wire). See Figure . Connector M110 is located under center console. See Figure .
- On Maxima only, check for poor connection at White, 18-pin connector M6 terminal No. 5 (Black wire). See Figure . Connector M6 is located under left side of instrument panel. See Figure or Figure .
Repair as necessary.
- Measure resistance between fuel pump assembly terminals No. 2 and 5 as shown in illustration. See Figure . If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace fuel level sensor.
- No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
