Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Maxima and 2002 Infiniti I35. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition switch to START position. If engine cranks, go to next step. If engine does not crank, repair starting system. See appropriate STARTERS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS.
  2. Turn ignition off. Loosen and retighten 2 engine ground bolts. See Figure . On bank 1, disconnect connector F58 (on I35) or F70 (on Maxima). See Fig 1 . Measure voltage between ground and connector F58 or F70 terminal No. 4 (Red/Green wire). On bank 2, disconnect CMP sensor (PHASE) harness connector. See Fig 2 . Measure voltage between ground and CMP sensor (PHASE) harness connector terminal No. 3 (Red/Green wire). If battery voltage exists, go to step  4 . If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
  3. Check the following:
    • Check for poor connection at Black, 8-pin connector F18 terminal No. 7 (Red/Green wire). See Figure . For location, see Figure or Figure .
    • On bank 1, check for open or short between connector F58 (on I35) or F70 (on Maxima), ECM and ECM relay. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
    • On bank 2, check for open or short between CMP sensor (PHASE), ECM and ECM relay. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.

    Repair as necessary.

  4. On bank 1, check continuity between engine ground and connector F58 or F70 terminal No. 3 (Black wire). On bank 2, check continuity between engine ground and CMP sensor harness connector terminal No. 1 (Black wire). Continuity should exist. Also, check circuit for short to voltage. If problem is found, repair as necessary. If problem is not found, go to next step.
  5. Disconnect ECM harness connector. See Figure . On bank 1, check continuity of Yellow wire between connector F58 or F70 terminal No. 1 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 65. See Figure . On bank 2, check continuity of Red wire between CMP sensor (PHASE) harness connector terminal No. 2 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 85. Also, check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem is found, repair as necessary. If problem is not found, go to next step.
  6. For bank 2, go to next step. For bank 1, check continuity of wires between CMP sensor (PHASE) harness connector and connector F58 or F70. See CMP SENSOR (PHASE) SUB-HARNESS IDENTIFICATION  table. Also, check circuits for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem is found, repair as necessary. If problem is not found, go to next step.
  7. Remove CMP sensor (PHASE). Visually inspect sensor for chipping. Measure resistance between sensor terminals as shown in illustration. See Figure . Replace sensor if it is chipped or if resistance is not as specified. If sensor is okay, go to next step.
  8. Visually inspect signal plate teeth for chipping. Replace camshaft, if chipped. If signal plate is okay, go to next step.
  9. No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
