Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Maxima and 2002 Infiniti I35. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition off. Loosen and retighten 2 engine ground bolts. See Figure . Disconnect connector F25 from connector F171. See Figure or Figure . Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and connector F25 terminal No. 4 (Red/Green wire). If battery voltage exists, go to step  3 . If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
  2. Check the following:
    • Check for poor connection at Black, 8-pin connector F18 terminal No. 7 (Red/Green wire). See Figure . For location, see Figure or Figure .
    • Check for open or short between connector F18, ECM and ECM relay. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.

    Repair as necessary.

  3. Turn ignition off. Check continuity between engine ground and connector F25 terminal No. 2 (Black wire). Continuity should exist. Also, check circuit for short to voltage. If problem is found, repair as necessary. If problem is not found, go to next step.
  4. Disconnect ECM harness connector. See Figure . Check continuity of White wire between connector F25 terminal No. 1 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 95. See Figure . Also, check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem is found, repair as necessary. If circuit is okay, go to next step.
  5. Disconnect CKP sensor (POS) harness connector. See Fig 1 . Check continuity of wires between CKP sensor (POS) harness connector and connector F171. See CKP SENSOR (POS) SUB-HARNESS IDENTIFICATION  table. Also, check circuits for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem is found, repair as necessary. If problem is not found, go to next step.
  6. Remove CKP sensor (POS). Visually inspect sensor for chipping. Measure resistance between sensor terminals as shown in illustration. See Fig 2 . Replace sensor if it is chipped or if resistance is not as specified. If sensor is okay, go to next step.
  7. Visually inspect signal plate teeth for chipping. Replace, if chipped. If signal plate is okay, go to next step.
  8. No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
