Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Maxima and 2002 Infiniti I35. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove ECT sensor, and place in heated water. For location, see Figure . Measure resistance between sensor terminals, with water at specified temperatures. See ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR RESISTANCE  table under DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE under DTC P0117 OR DTC P0118: ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace ECT sensor.
  2. Allow engine to cool to less than 158°F (70°C). Start engine. Grasp lower radiator hose to check for coolant flow. If coolant is flowing, replace thermostat. If coolant is not flowing, go to next step.
  3. No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
