Altima, I35, Maxima & Sentra 2.5L

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 9 other vehicles, including the 2002 Nissan Xterra, 2002 Nissan Sentra, 2002 Nissan Quest, 2002 Nissan Pathfinder, and 2002 Nissan Maxima. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Check the following:
    • Harness connectors for poor connections.
    • Vacuum hoses for leaks, kinks or misrouting.
    • Wiring for improper connections, pinches and cuts.

Repair as necessary. Go to next step.

  2. Run engine at about 2000 RPM for 2 minutes under no load. Snap throttle to 2000-3000 RPM, 2 or 3 times. Let engine idle for about one minute. Check idle speed using scan tool or tachometer. Target idle speed should be 650-750 RPM with transmission in Park or Neutral. If target idle speed is as specified, go to step  7. If target idle speed is not as specified, go to next step.
  3. Perform accelerator pedal released position learning, throttle valve closed position learning and idle air volume learning. See PROGRAMMING in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article. Go to next step.
  4. Start engine and warm to normal operating temperature. Check idle speed using scan tool or tachometer. Target idle speed should be 650-750 RPM with transmission in Park or Neutral. If target idle speed is as specified, go to step  7. If target idle speed is not as specified, go to next step.
  5. Check the following:
    • CMP sensor and circuit. See DTC P0340: CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
    • CKP sensor and circuit. See DTC P0335: CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (POS) under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.

If problem is found, repair as necessary. If problem is not found, go to next step.

  6. Substitute another known-good ECM to check ECM function. Go to step  3.
  7. Run engine at idle. Check ignition timing with a timing light. Ignition timing should be 10-20 degrees BTDC with transmission in Park or Neutral. If ignition timing is as specified, test is complete. If ignition timing is not as specified, go to next step.
  8. Perform accelerator pedal released position learning, throttle valve closed position learning and idle air volume learning. See PROGRAMMING in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article. Go to next step.
  9. Start engine and warm to normal operating temperature. Check idle speed using scan tool or tachometer. Target idle speed should be 650-750 RPM with transmission in Park or Neutral. If target idle speed is as specified, go to step  12. If target idle speed is not as specified, go to next step.
  10. Run engine at idle. Check ignition timing with a timing light. Ignition timing should be 10-20 degrees BTDC with transmission in Park or Neutral. If ignition timing is as specified, test is complete. If ignition timing is not as specified, go to next step.
  11. Check timing chain installation. See appropriate article in ENGINES. If problem is found, repair as necessary. If problem is not found, go to next step.

  13. Substitute another known-good ECM to check ECM function. Go to step  3.
