Frontier 2.4L, Sentra 1.8L & Xterra 2.4L
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 9 other vehicles, including the 2002 Nissan Xterra, 2002 Nissan Sentra, 2002 Nissan Quest, 2002 Nissan Pathfinder, and 2002 Nissan Maxima. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Remove valve cover and spark plugs. Rotate crankshaft to bring piston No. 1 to TDC on compression stroke. Pointer should be aligned with TDC mark on crankshaft pulley. Cylinder No. 1 lifters should be loose and cylinder No. 4 lifters should be tight. If not, rotate crankshaft 360° and align as described.
- Measure valve clearance for valves as specified in VALVE IDENTIFICATION (1.8L & 2.4L) table. Verify valve clearance is as specified in VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT table. Rotate crankshaft 360° and repeat procedure. Record valve clearance measurements that are not within specifications.NOTE: Adjust valve clearance when engine is cold.CAUTION: DO NOT damage camshaft with valve lifter compressor.
- To adjust valve clearance, rotate crankshaft to position cam lobe upward for valve to be adjusted. Rotate valve lifter so notch area on valve lifter is facing center of cylinder head. Using Valve Lifter Compressor (KV10115110), press valve lifter downward, away from camshaft. See Fig 1.CAUTION: DO NOT damage camshaft with valve lifter retainer.
- Install Valve Lifter Retainer (K10115120) between camshaft and valve lifter, as close to camshaft bracket as possible. See Fig 2. Remove valve lifter compressor. Using compressed air, aimed toward lifter, separate adjusting shim from lifter. Using a small screwdriver and magnet, remove adjusting shim.
- Measure thickness of removed shim. Determine new shim size by subtracting specified amount from measured valve clearance and adding the result to the measured thickness of the removed shim. See REPLACEMENT SHIM CALCULATION table.
- Select a new shim closest in size to that required. Shims are available in.0008 inch (.02 mm) increments. Install new shim with surface on which thickness is stamped facing down. Recheck valve clearance.
