Front Axle Shaft: Installation

- Apply multipurpose grease to splines of outboard joint.
- Attach inboard slide joint housing to differential final drive.
- Install bearing spacer onto axle shaft. Ensure chamfered side of bearing spacer is facing inboard. See Fig 1 .
- Install axle shaft into wheel bearing hub.
- Check end play of axle shaft, adjust axle shaft axial end play by selecting a suitable size snap ring using the following steps:
- Temporarily install new snap ring on axle shaft that is the same thickness as the one that was removed.
- Set dial gauge on axle shaft end.
- Measure axial end play of axle shaft. Axial end play should be .004-.0177 in. (.10-.45 mm). See Fig 2 .
- If axial end play is not within the specified limit, select another snap ring.
- Install remaining components in reverse order of removal. Tighten all bolts and nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
