Reassembly (Outer Joint)

  1. Insert necessary amount of grease into joint serrating hole until grease begins to ooze from ball groove and serration hole. After inserting grease, wipe off old grease that has oozed out with shop cloth.
  2. Wrap vinyl tape around shaft splines.
  3. Install new boot and boot clamps to axle shaft.
  4. Remove vinyl tape.
  5. Attach new circlip to axle shaft. Circlip must fit securely into shaft groove. Attach nut to joint. Use wooden hammer to press fit clip.
  6. Pack joint with specified amount of grease. See BOOT GREASE CAPACITY  .
  7. Install boot. Ensure boot is properly positioned on axle shaft groove. Set boot so that it does not swell and deform when its length is set to specified length of 6.42 in. (163 mm). See Figure .
  8. Lock boot clamps securely with suitable tool. See Fig 1 .

  9. Secure boot clamps so that the pinched clearance in the clamp, "M", is .039-.157 in. (1.0-4.0 mm). See Fig 2 .

  10. After install housing and shaft, rotate boot to check whether or not its position on the axle is correct. If not correct, remove boot clamps and reposition boot. Secure boot with new axle clamps.
