Procedure "A"

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Nissan Maxima. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition switch OFF. Disconnect IPDM E/R harness connector E123. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS  .
  2. Check voltage between IPDM E/R terminal No. 15 and ground. See Fig 2 . Voltage should be battery voltage. If voltage is as specified, go to step  4 . If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
  3. Check the following:
    • 40 amp fusible links.
    • Harness for open or short between IPDM E/R and battery.
Repair open circuit or short to ground in harness or connectors.
  4. Check harness continuity between IPDM E/R terminals No. 16 and ground. See Fig 2 . Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to power. If problem is found, repair open circuit or short to power in harness or connectors. If circuits are OK, go to next step.
  5. Disconnect cooling fan motor No. 1 harness connector. See Fig 1 . Check voltage between terminals No. 1, 2 and ground. Voltage should be battery voltage. If voltage is as specified, go to step  7 . If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
  6. Check the following:
    • 40 amp fusible links.
    • Harness for open or short between IPDM E/R and battery.
Repair open circuit or short to ground in harness or connectors.
  7. Disconnect IPDM E/R harness connector E118. Check harness continuity between the following terminals:
    • Cooling fan motor No. 1 terminal No. 3 and IPDM E/R terminal No. 8. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Continuity should exist.
    • Cooling fan motor No. 1 terminal No. 4 and IPDM E/R terminal No. 11 and 12. Continuity should exist.
Also check harness for short to ground or short to power. If problem is found, repair open circuit or short to power in harness or connectors. If circuits are OK, go to next step.
  8. Disconnect cooling fan motor No. 2 harness connector. See Fig 1 . Check continuity between terminals No. 3, 4 and ground. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to power. If problem is found, repair open circuit or short to power in harness or connectors. If circuits are OK, go to next step.
  9. Check harness continuity between the following terminals:
    • Cooling fan motor No. 2 terminal No. 1 and IPDM E/R terminal No. 13. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Continuity should exist.
    • Cooling fan motor No. 2 terminal No. 2 and IPDM E/R terminal No. 10 and 14. Continuity should exist.
Also check harness for short to power. If problem is found, repair open circuit or short to power in harness or connectors. If circuits are OK, go to next step.
  10. Check cooling fan motors, see COOLING FAN MOTORS (NO. 1 & 2)  . If problem is found, replace cooling fan motor(s). If fan motors are OK, go to next step.
  11. Perform INTERMITTENTS in appropriate TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. If problem is found, repair or replace harness or connectors. If no problem is found, replace IPDM E/R.
