Axle Shaft: Removal

- Raise and support vehicle.
- Remove wheel.
- Remove wheel bearing hub nut from end of axle.
- Disconnect ABS wheel sensor, and put wire aside.
- Remove lower splash shield.
- Remove lower ball joint nut and separate lower ball joint from steering knuckle using ball joint remover.
- Remove connecting rod from strut.
- Remove strut lower mounting bolts, if applicable.
- Remove axle shaft from steering knuckle hub using a soft mallet. If difficult to remove steering knuckle, use appropriate puller tool.
- Remove support bearing bolts and pull right axle shaft from transaxle.
- Remove right axle shaft from transaxle. See Fig 1 .
- On models equipped with manual transaxle, pry off left axle shaft from transaxle with screwdriver.
- On models equipped with automatic transaxle, insert screwdriver into transaxle opening from right axle shaft and strike left axle shaft with hammer. Use caution to not damage pinion mate shaft and side gear. Fig 2 .
- Remove circular clip from transaxle side of axle shaft and discard.
