Disassembly (Models Without Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) System)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Nissan Quest. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove brake fluid from reservoir. Bend claws of stopper cap outward and remove stopper cap. See Fig 1 . Be careful not to let primary piston pop out. Discard stopper cap.
  2. Place the side of the cylinder body with chamfering around the pin insertion hole facing up, and secure the master cylinder assembly with a vise. When securing the master cylinder assembly with the vise, be sure not to over-tighten. With a .16 in. (4 mm) pin punch, drive out spring pin from cylinder body and remove reservoir. See Fig 1 . Remove valve stopper while lightly pushing primary piston into cylinder. Remove primary piston assembly.
  3. If secondary piston assembly is difficult to remove, tap the flange of master cylinder with a soft block of wood, and carefully pull the secondary piston assembly straight out to prevent cylinder inner wall from being damaged. Inspect inner wall of cylinder for damage, wear, corrosion, and pin holes. Replace cylinder if defective.
  4. NOTE: DO NOT use any dropped parts.
CAUTION: DO NOT reuse primary and secondary piston assemblies. DO NOT reuse reservoir grommets.
  5. Replace parts as necessary. To reassemble, reverse disassembly procedure.
