Disassembly and Assembly: Disassembly

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2012 Nissan Pathfinder. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: The following procedures explain how to disassemble the engine with the engine stand fastened to the bell housing. Some steps may be different if using a different type of engine stand.
  1. Remove engine assembly from vehicle. Refer to "REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION ".
CAUTION: Before removing the hanging chains, make sure engine stand is stable and there is no risk of overturning.
  2. Remove the engine mounting insulator and bracket using power tool.
  3. Remove the parts that may restrict installation of the engine to the engine stand.
  4. Remove the drive plate using the following procedure:
    1. Put a match mark (A) on the crankshaft and drive plate for alignment during installation before removing the drive plate.

    2. Remove the drive plate.
      • Lock the crankshaft by holding the crankshaft pulley bolt.
      • Remove drive plate bolts diagonally.
      CAUTION:
      • Do not damage the drive plate. Especially, avoid deforming and damaging the signal plate teeth (circumference position).
      • Keep magnetic materials away from signal plate.
      • Place the drive plate with the signal plate surface facing upward.

  5. Lift engine, and mount to engine stand.
    • Any widely used commercially available engine stand can be used.
      CAUTION:
      • Use an engine stand that has a load capacity [approximately 240kg (529 lb) or more] large enough for supporting the engine weight.
      • Before removing the hanging chains, make sure engine stand is stable and there is no risk of overturning.

  7. Remove the following components and associated parts.
  8. Remove knock sensor and sub harness.
CAUTION: Carefully handle sensor, avoiding shocks.

  9. Check connecting rod side clearance. Refer to "INSPECTION AFTER DISASSEMBLY ".
  10. Remove piston and connecting rod assembly as follows.
    1. Position the crankshaft pin corresponding to the connecting rod to be removed onto bottom dead center.
    2. Remove connecting rod cap.
    3. Push the piston and connecting rod assembly out to the cylinder head side using suitable tool.

  11. Remove connecting rod bearings.
CAUTION: When removing them, note the installation position. Keep them in the correct order.
  12. Check piston ring side clearance. Refer to "INSPECTION AFTER DISASSEMBLY ".
  13. Remove piston rings from piston using suitable tool.
    CAUTION:
    • Do not damage piston.
    • Do not damage piston rings by expanding them excessively.

  15. Separate and remove rear oil seal retainer from cylinder block.
CAUTION: Do not damage mating surface.
  16. Remove rear oil seal from rear oil seal retainer.
  17. Measure the crankshaft side clearance. Refer to "INSPECTION AFTER DISASSEMBLY ".
  18. Remove main bearing caps as follows:
    • Loosen bolts in several different steps.
    1. Loosen side bolts (M10) starting from 30 to 21 to remove.
    2. Loosen main bearing cap sub bolts (M9) starting from 20 to 11 to remove.
    3. Loosen main bearing cap bolts (M12) starting from 10 to 1 to remove.
