Diagnostic Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Sentra. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect TP switch harness connector. See Figure . Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 5 (Brown wire) at TP switch harness connector. See Figure . If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open or short in Brown wire between TP switch and fuse box.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM harness connector. See Figure . Check continuity of Yellow/Purple wire between terminal No. 40 at PCM harness connector and terminal No. 4 at TP switch harness connector. See Figure and Figure . Continuity should exist. Also check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem exists, repair as necessary and retest system. If problem does not exist, go to next step.
- Reconnect all harness connectors. Start engine and warm to normal operating temperature. Check ignition timing and idle speed. See BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article. Ignition timing should be 7-11 degrees BTC and idle speed should be 750-850 RPM (in Park). If ignition timing and idle speed are within specification, go to next step. If ignition timing and/or idle speed are not within specification, repair as necessary and retest system.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect TP switch harness connector. Disconnect vacuum hose from throttle opener. Connect a hand-held vacuum pump to throttle opener vacuum port. Apply 11.81 in. Hg. Check continuity between terminals No. 4 and 5 at TP switch (component side). Continuity should exist when accelerator pedal is released. Continuity should not exist when accelerator pedal is depressed. If continuity is as specified, go to step 6 . If continuity is not as specified, go to next step.
- Adjust TP sensor. See ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS article. If TP sensor will not adjust properly, replace TP sensor. If TP sensor will adjust properly, go to next step.
- Remove vacuum pump and connect vacuum hose. Connect all harness connectors. Start engine and warm to normal operating temperature. Stop engine and turn ignition on. Disconnect vacuum hose from throttle opener. Connect a hand-held vacuum pump to throttle opener vacuum port. Apply 11.81 in. Hg. Using a DVOM, backprobe PCM harness connector and measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 92 (Yellow wire) at PCM harness connector, with throttle in specified positions. See THROTTLE POSITION (TP) SENSOR VOLTAGE table. If voltage is not as specified, replace TP sensor. If voltage is as specified, go to next step.
- No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See TESTING PROCEDURE under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
THROTTLE POSITION (TP) SENSOR VOLTAGE
| Throttle Position | Volts |
|---|---|
| Fully Closed | .15-.85 |
| Between Fully Closed & Fully Open | .86-3.4 |
| Fully Open | 3.5-4.7 |
