Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Sentra. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Check the PCV hose for correct connection or damage. Repair as necessary. Go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Idle Air Control Valve-Auxiliary Air Control (IACV-AAC) valve harness connector. See Fig 1 . Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminals No. 2 and 5 (both Green/White wires) at IACV-AAC valve harness connector. See Fig 2 . If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exists, repair open or short in appropriate wire(s) between IACV-AAC valve and PCM relay, then retest system.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM harness connector. See Figure . Check continuity of Brown wire between terminal No. 1 at IACV-AAC valve harness connector and terminal No. 6 at PCM harness connector. See Figure and Fig 2 . Check continuity of Pink wire between terminal No. 3 at IACV-AAC valve harness connector and terminal No. 15 at PCM harness connector. Check continuity of Light Green wire between terminal No. 4 at IACV-AAC valve harness connector and terminal No. 7 at PCM harness connector. Check continuity of Orange wire between terminal No. 6 at IACV-AAC valve harness connector and terminal No. 16 at PCM harness connector. Continuity should exist in all circuits. Also check all circuits for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem exists, repair as necessary and retest system. If problem does not exist, go to next step.
  4. Connect IACV-AAC and PCM harness connectors. Disconnect power steering air control valve vacuum hose from air intake duct. See Fig 3 . Start engine and let idle. Very little or no vacuum should be present at disconnected vacuum hose. If vacuum is as specified, go to next step. If vacuum is not as specified, replace power steering air control valve or damage vacuum hose, then retest system.
  5. Check vacuum at disconnect vacuum hose while turning steering wheel. Vacuum should exist when steering wheel is being turned. If vacuum is as specified, go to step  8 . If vacuum is not as specified, go to next step.
  6. Turn ignition off. Check vacuum hose between intake manifold and power steering air control valve. Also check vacuum port at intake manifold for damage and blockage. If problem exists, repair as necessary and retest system. If problem does not exist, go to next step.
  7. Check vacuum hose between air intake duct and power steering air control valve. Also check vacuum port at air intake duct for damage and blockage. If problem exists, repair as necessary and retest system. If problem does not exist, go to next step.
  8. Turn ignition off. Disconnect IACV-AAC harness connector. Measure resistance between terminal No. 2 and terminals No. 1 and 3 at IACV-AAC valve (component side). Measure resistance between terminal No. 5 and terminals No. 4 and 6 at IACV-AAC valve (component side). All resistances should be 20-24 ohms at 68°F (20°C). If resistances are as specified, go to next step. If any resistance is not as specified, replace IACV-AAC valve. After replacing IACV-AAC valve, perform idle air volume learning procedure. See ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS article.
  9. Connect all disconnected components. Turn ignition on, then off. Ensure IACV-AAC valve makes an operating sound. If operating sound is heard, go to next step. If operating sound is not heard, replace IACV-AAC valve. After replacing IACV-AAC valve, perform idle air volume learning procedure. See ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS article.
  10. No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See TESTING PROCEDURE  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
