Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Sentra. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Check exhaust system for leaks. If problem exists, repair as necessary and retest system. If problem does not exist, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect EGR volume control valve harness connector. See Fig 1 . Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminals No. 2 and 5 (both Green/White wires) at EGR volume control valve harness connector. See Fig 2 . If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open or short in circuit between EGR volume control valve and PCM relay.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM harness connector. See Figure . Check continuity of Light Blue wire between terminal No. 8 at PCM harness connector and terminal No. 1 at EGR volume control valve harness connector. See Figure . Check continuity of White/Black wire between terminal No. 9 at PCM harness connector and terminal No. 4 at EGR volume control valve harness connector. Check continuity of Red/Yellow wire between terminal No. 17 at PCM harness connector and terminal No. 3 at EGR volume control valve harness connector. Check continuity of Brown/Red wire between terminal No. 18 at PCM harness connector and terminal No. 6 at EGR volume control valve harness connector. Continuity should exist on all circuits. Also check circuits for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem exists, repair as necessary and retest system. If problem does not exist, go to next step.
  4. Check EGR passages and hose for blockage and damage. If problem exists, repair as necessary and retest system. If problem does not exist, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition off. Remove EGR temperature sensor. See Fig 3 . Measure resistance between EGR temperature sensor terminals (component side) with EGR temperature sensor at specified temperatures. See EGR TEMPERATURE SENSOR RESISTANCE  table. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace EGR temperature sensor and retest system.
  6. Measure resistance between terminal No. 2 and terminals No. 1 and 3, and between terminal No. 5 and terminals No. 4 and 6 at EGR volume control valve terminals (component side). See Fig 4 . Resistance should be 20.9-23.1 ohms at 68°F (20°C). If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace and EGR volume control valve and retest system.
  7. Remove EGR volume control valve. Connect EGR volume control valve and PCM harness connectors. Turn ignition on, then off while observing EGR volume control valve shaft. If shaft moves forward and backwards in relation to ignition switch position, go to next step. If shaft does not move forward and backwards in relation to ignition switch position, replace EGR volume control valve and retest system.
  8. No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See TESTING PROCEDURE  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
