Diagnostic Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Sentra. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Start engine. If engine starts, go to step 9 . If engine does not start, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on. Using a DVOM, backprobe PCM harness connector and measure voltage between ground and terminals No. 110 and 112 (both White wires) at PCM harness connector. See Figure and Figure . If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair PCM power supply and retest system. See COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect ignition coil condenser harness connector. See Fig 1 . Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 1 (Green/White wire) at ignition coil condenser harness connector. If battery voltage exists, go to step 7 . If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Remove PCM relay. See Fig 2 . Check continuity of Green/White wire between terminal No. 1 at ignition coil condenser harness connector and terminal No. 7 at PCM relay harness connector. See Fig 4 . Continuity should exist. Also check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem exist, repair as necessary and retest system. If problem does not exist, go to next step.
- Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 6 (Red/Black wire) at PCM relay harness connector. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open or short to ground in Red/Black wire between PCM relay and fuse/fusible link box in engine compartment, then retest system.
- Using fused jumper wires, apply battery voltage and ground between terminals No. 1 and 2 at PCM relay (component side). See Fig 3 . With battery voltage applied, continuity should exist between terminals No. 3 and 5, and between terminals No. 6 and 7 at PCM relay. Remove fused jumper wires. Without battery voltage applied, continuity should not exist between terminals No. 3 and 5, and between terminals No. 6 and 7 at PCM relay. If relay test as specified, go to step 13 . If relay does not test as specified, replace PCM relay and retest system.
- Turn ignition off. Check continuity between ground and terminal No. 2 (Black/Yellow wire) at ignition coil condenser harness connector. Continuity should exist. Also check circuit for short to voltage. If problem does not exist, go to next step. If problem exists, repair as necessary and retest system.
- Measure resistance between ignition coil condenser terminals (component side). Resistance should be 1000 k/ohms and 77°F (25°C). If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace ignition coil condenser and retest system.
- Turn ignition off. Connect all disconnected harness connectors. Disconnect all ignition coil harness connectors. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage at terminal No. 3 (Green/White wire) at each ignition coil harness connector. If battery voltage exists at each ignition coil, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist at each ignition coil, repair open in Green/White wire between PCM relay and appropriate ignition coil, then retest system.
- Turn ignition off. Check continuity between ground and terminal No. 2 (Black/Yellow wire) at each ignition coil harness connector. Continuity should exist. Also check circuit for short to voltage. If problem exists, repair as necessary and retest system. If problem does not exist, go to next step.
- Disconnect PCM harness connector. See Figure . For ignition coil No. 1, check continuity of Black/Red wire between terminal No. 1 at ignition coil No. 1 harness connector and terminal No. 35 at PCM harness connector. See Figure . For ignition coil No. 2, check continuity of Purple wire between terminal No. 1 at ignition coil No. 2 harness connector and terminal No. 36 at PCM harness connector. For ignition coil No. 3, check continuity of Blue/Red wire between terminal No. 1 at ignition coil No. 3 harness connector and terminal No. 37 at PCM harness connector. For ignition coil No. 4, check continuity of Gray/Red wire between terminal No. 1 at ignition coil No. 4 harness connector and terminal No. 38 at PCM harness connector. Continuity should exist. Also check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem exists, repair as necessary and retest system. If problem does not exist, go to next step.
- Measure resistance between terminals No. 2 and 3 at each ignition coil (component side). See Fig 5 . If resistance is zero ohms, replace appropriate ignition coil(s). If resistance is not zero ohms, go to next step.
- No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See TESTING PROCEDURE under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
