Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Sentra. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition off. Loosen and retighten engine ground bolts located on intake manifold. See Figure . Disconnect CKP sensor and PCM harness connectors. See Figure and Fig 1 . Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 3 (White wire) at CKP sensor harness connector. See Fig 2 . If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exists, repair open or short in wiring between CKP and PCM relay. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
  2. Turn ignition off. Check continuity of Red wire between terminal No. 2 at CKP sensor harness connector and terminal No. 85 at PCM harness connector. See Figure and Fig 2 . Continuity should exist. Also check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem exists, repair as necessary and retest system. If problem does not exist, go to next step.
  3. Connect PCM harness connector. Check continuity between ground and terminal No. 1 (Black wire) at CKP sensor harness connector. Continuity should exist. Also check circuit for short to voltage. If problem exist, repair as necessary and retest system. If problem does not exist, go to next step.
  4. Remove CKP sensor. Inspect CKP sensor for physical damage. Connect negative lead of ohmmeter to terminal No. 1 and positive lead to terminal No. 2 at CKP sensor (component side). Connect negative lead of ohmmeter to terminal No. 1 and positive lead to terminal No. 3 at CKP sensor (component side). Connect negative lead of ohmmeter to terminal No. 2 and positive lead to terminal No. 3 at CKP sensor (component side). See Fig 3 . All resistances should be greater than zero ohms and less than infinity at 77°F (25°C). If damage exists or resistance is not as specified, replace CKP sensor and retest system. If damage does not exist and resistance is as specified, go to next step.
  5. No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See TESTING PROCEDURE  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
