Procedure "B"

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Sentra. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition off. Remove cooling fan relays No. 2 and 3. See Figure . Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminals No. 1 (Brown wire) and No. 3 (Green wire on cooling fan relay No. 2; Blue/White wire on cooling fan relay No. 3) at cooling fan relays No. 2 and 3 sockets. See Figure . If battery voltage exists at both terminals, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist at either terminal, repair open or short in appropriate circuit and retest system. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect both cooling fan motor harness connectors located on fan shrouds. Check continuity of Blue/Black wire between terminal No. 5 at cooling fan relay No. 3 socket and terminal No. 2 at left cooling fan motor harness connector. See Figure and Figure . Check continuity between ground and terminal No. 7 (Black wire) at cooling fan relay No. 3 harness connector. Check continuity in Yellow/Black wire between terminal No. 6 at cooling fan relay No. 3 harness connector and terminal No. 3 at left cooling fan motor harness connector. Check continuity of Green/Yellow wire between terminal No. 5 at cooling fan relay No. 2 harness connector and terminal No. 2 at right cooling fan motor harness connector. Check continuity between ground and terminal No. 7 (Black wire) at cooling fan relay No. 2 harness connector. Check continuity in White/Blue wire between terminal No. 6 at cooling fan relay No. 2 harness connector and terminal No. 3 at right cooling fan motor harness connector. Continuity should exist in all checks. Also check circuits for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem exists, repair as necessary and retest system. If problem does not exist, go to next step.
  3. Disconnect PCM harness connector. See Figure . Check continuity of Light Green/Black wire between terminal No. 2 at cooling fan relays No. 2 and 3 sockets and terminal No. 12 at PCM harness connector. See Figure and Figure . Continuity should exist. Also check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem exists, repair as necessary and retest system. If problem does not exist, go to next step.
  4. NOTE: Perform step  4 for both cooling fan relay No. 2 and 3.
  5. Using fused jumper wires, apply battery voltage and ground between terminals No. 1 and 2 at appropriate cooling fan relay (component side). See Figure . Continuity should exist between terminals No. 3 and 5, and between terminals No. 6 and 7 at cooling fan relay (component side). Remove jumper wires. Continuity should not exist between terminals No. 3 and 5, or between terminals No. 6 and 7 at cooling fan relay (component side). If continuity is as specified, go to next step. If continuity is not as specified, replace appropriate cooling fan relay and retest system.
  6. Using fused jumper wires, connect positive battery voltage to terminal No. 1 and ground terminal No. 4 at each cooling fan motor connector (component side). See Figure . Fan should operate at low speed. Using additional jumper wires, apply battery positive to terminal No. 2 and ground to terminal No. 3. Fan should operate at high speed. If fan operates as specified, go to next step. If fan does not operate as specified, replace appropriate cooling fan motor and retest system.
  7. No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See TESTING PROCEDURE  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
