Diagnostic Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Nissan Sentra. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect intake valve timing control solenoid valve harness connector. See Fig 1 . Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 1 (Brown wire) at intake valve timing control solenoid valve harness connector. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open or short in Brown wire between intake valve timing control solenoid valve and fuse box, then retest system.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM harness connector. See Figure . Check continuity of Yellow/Red wire between terminal No. 2 at intake valve timing control solenoid valve harness connector and terminal No. 1 at PCM harness connector. See Figure . Continuity should exist. Also check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem exists, repair as necessary and retest system. If problem does not exist, go to next step.
- Check engine oil pressure. See appropriate article in ENGINES. Oil pressure should be greater than 14 psi (1 kg/cm2 ) at 600 RPM, greater than 43 psi (3 kg/cm2 ) at 2000 RPM and greater than 57 psi (4 kg/cm2 ) at 6000 RPM. If oil pressure is as specified, go to next step. If oil pressure is not as specified, repair engine mechanical malfunction as necessary and retest system.
- Check air intake system for leaks. If problem does not exist, go to next step. If problem exists, repair as necessary and retest system.
- Check intake valve timing control position sensor. See DTC P1140: INTAKE VALVE TIMING CONTROL POSITION SENSOR . If problem does not exist, go to next step. If problem exists, repair as necessary and retest system.
- Remove intake valve timing control solenoid valve. Check oil passages for blockage and metal debris. Using fused jumper wires, apply battery voltage and ground between intake valve timing control solenoid valve terminals (component side). With battery voltage applied, plunger should extend. If intake valve timing control solenoid valve operates as specified, go to next step. If intake valve timing control solenoid valve does not operate as specified, replace intake valve timing control solenoid valve.
- No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See TESTING PROCEDURE under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
