Removal & Installation
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Nissan Altima. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING:
Perform the work when the exhaust and cooling system have completely cooled down.
CAUTION:
Discard any heated oxygen sensor which has been dropped from a height of more then 19 inches (0.5 m) onto a hard surface, like a concrete floor, use a new sensor.
CAUTION:
Before installing new oxygen sensor, clean exhaust system threads using, Oxygen Sensor Thread Cleaner tool J-43897-18 or J-43897-12 and approved anti-seize lubricant.
CAUTION:
Do not over-tighten the heated oxygen sensors. Doing so may cause damage to the heated oxygen sensor, resulting in a malfunction and the MIL coming ON.
NOTE:
Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S) are mounted in exhaust pipe, upstream and downstream of catalytic converter. HO2S are equipped with a permanent pigtail which must be disconnected and protected from damage when removing HO2S.
NOTE:
HO2S may be difficult to remove when engine temperature is less than 120°F (49°C). Ensure HO2S is free of contaminants. Avoid using cleaning solvents of any type. Always use anti-seize compound on threads before installing.
NOTE:
It may be necessary to remove heat shields to remove O2 sensors.
- To remove HO2S, see Fig 1, and preform the following.
- Remove the harness connector of each of the O2 sensors. See Fig 2 and Fig 3 . Disconnect the harness's from the bracket, middle clamp and untangle from any obstructions towards sensor, where applicable.
- Remove O2 sensors with the Tool. See Figure. For the front sensors, see Fig 4. For the rear sensors follow the pigtails to the sensors. Manufacturer did not supply illustration for rear sensor locations.
NOTE: HO2S may be difficult to remove when engine temperature is less than 120°F (49°C). Ensure HO2S is free of contaminants. Avoid using cleaning solvents of any type. Always use anti-seize compound on threads before installing. - Installation is in reverse order of removal. Tighten components to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
CAUTION:
Do not over-tighten the heated oxygen sensors. Doing so may cause damage to the heated oxygen sensor, resulting in a malfunction and the MIL coming ON.
