Removal & Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Nissan Altima. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: Perform the work when the exhaust and cooling system have completely cooled down.
CAUTION: Discard any heated oxygen sensor which has been dropped from a height of more then 19 inches (0.5 m) onto a hard surface, like a concrete floor, use a new sensor.
CAUTION: Before installing new oxygen sensor, clean exhaust system threads using, Oxygen Sensor Thread Cleaner tool J-43897-18 or J-43897-12 and approved anti-seize lubricant.
CAUTION: Do not over-tighten the heated oxygen sensors. Doing so may cause damage to the heated oxygen sensor, resulting in a malfunction and the MIL coming ON.
NOTE: Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S) are mounted in exhaust pipe, upstream and downstream of catalytic converter. HO2S are equipped with a permanent pigtail which must be disconnected and protected from damage when removing HO2S.
NOTE: HO2S may be difficult to remove when engine temperature is less than 120°F (49°C). Ensure HO2S is free of contaminants. Avoid using cleaning solvents of any type. Always use anti-seize compound on threads before installing.
NOTE: Do not remove the entire exhaust manifold and three way catalyst, only remove the specific components described in this procedure. The illustration shows the entire assemble as an exploded view for conveyance only.
  1. Remove engine under cover, with power tool. See Fig 1.
  2. Disconnect the electrical connector of each heated oxygen sensor, and unhook the harness from the bracket and middle clamp on the cover. See Fig 1 and Fig 2 .
CAUTION: Be careful not to damage the oxygen sensor. Discard any heated oxygen sensor which has been dropped from a height of more then 19 inches (0.5 m) onto a hard surface, like a concrete floor, use a new sensor.
  3. NOTE: HO2S may be difficult to remove when engine temperature is less than 120°F (49°C). Ensure HO2S is free of contaminants. Avoid using cleaning solvents of any type. Always use anti-seize compound on threads before installing.
  4. Remove the heated oxygen sensors with tool. See Fig 3 and Fig 4 .
  5. CAUTION: Do not over-tighten the heated oxygen sensors. Doing so may cause damage to the heated oxygen sensor, resulting in a malfunction and the MIL coming ON.
  6. Installation is in reverse order of removal. Tighten components to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  7. Tighten HO2S to specification. Tighten components to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
