Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Nissan Pathfinder. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition off. Check the stop lamp when depressing and releasing the brake pedal. If brake lights do not operate properly, go to next step. If brake lights operate properly, go to step  4.
  2. Disconnect brake switch harness connector. Check voltage between brake switch terminal No. 1 and ground with CONSULT-II or tester. Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step. If voltage is as specified, go to step  4.
  3. Check fuse No. 14 (10-amp) in fuse block. Check fuse block connector M10. Check circuit between fuse block and brake switch. Repair as necessary.
  4. Disconnect ECM 116-pin harness connector. For ECM location, see Figure. Check continuity of Green/Yellow wire between ECM harness connector terminal No. 59 and brake switch terminal No. 2. Continuity should exist. Also, check circuit for short to ground or short to voltage. If problem is found, go to next step. If no problem is found, go to step .
  5. Check following:
    • Check for poor, loose, corroded or damage to terminal connections in in-line harness connectors . See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL.
    • Check for poor, loose, corroded or damage to terminal connections in in-line harness connectors.
    • Check for open in circuit between brake switch and ECM.
If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST.
  6. Check brake switch. With brake pedal released, continuity should not exist between terminals No. 1 and 2. With brake pedal pressed, continuity should exist between terminals No. 1 and 2. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, replace brake switch.
  7. No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
