Diagnostic Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Nissan Pathfinder. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- If using CONSULT-II, go to next step. If using scan tool, go to step 4.
- Turn ignition on. Select "BRAKE SW1" in "DATA MONITOR" mode with CONSULT-II. Check "BRAKE SW1" under the following conditions:
- When brake pedal is depressed, BRAKE SW1 should be OFF.
- When brake pedal is released, BRAKE SW1 should be ON.
- Select "BRAKE SW2" in "DATA MONITOR" mode with CONSULT-II. Check "BRAKE SW2" under the following conditions:
- When brake pedal is depressed, BRAKE SW2 should be ON.
- When brake pedal is released, BRAKE SW2 should be OFF.
- Turn ignition on. Check voltage between ground and ECM harness connector F203 terminal No. 108 under the following conditions:
- When brake pedal is depressed, about zero volts should exist.
- When brake pedal is released, battery voltage should exist.
- Check voltage between ground and ECM harness connector terminal No. 101 under the following conditions:
- When brake pedal is depressed, battery voltage should exist.
- When brake pedal is released, about zero volts should exist.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect ASCD brake switch harness connector. Turn ignition on. Check voltage between ASCD brake switch terminal No. 1 and ground with CONSULT-II or tester. Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step. If voltage is as specified, go to step 8
- Check the following: fuse block (JB) connector M10 and fuse No. 11 (7.5-amp), and open or short in harness between ASCD brake switch and fuse. Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM harness connector F203. Check harness continuity between ECM harness connector terminal No. 108 and ASCD brake switch harness connector terminal No. 2. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for open, short to ground and short to power. If no problem is found, go to step 10. If problem is found, go to next step.
- Check harness connectors M94 and F27. Check harness for open and short between ECM and ASCD brake switch. Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Check continuity between ASCD brake switch terminals No. 1 and 2. When brake pedal is depressed, continuity should not exist. When brake pedal is released, continuity should exist. If ASCD brake switch is okay, go to step 16. If ASCD brake switch is faulty, replace ASCD brake switch.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect stop lamp switch harness connector M154. Check voltage between ground and stop lamp switch harness connector terminal No. 1. Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step. If voltage is as specified, go to step 13.
- Check the following: fuse block (JB) connector M10 and fuse No. 14 (10-amp), and harness for open or short between stop lamp switch and fuse. Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Disconnect ECM harness connector F203. Check harness continuity between stop lamp switch terminal No. 2 and ECM terminal No. 101. Continuity should exist. A1so check harness for open, short to ground and short to power. If problem is found, go to next step. If no problem is found, go to step 15.
- Check harness connectors M94 and F27. Check harness for open and short between ECM and stop lamp switch. Check harness for open and short between stop lamp switch and ECM. Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
- Check continuity between stop lamp switch terminals No. 1 and 2. When brake pedal is depressed, continuity should exist. When brake pedal is released, continuity should not exist. If stop lamp switch is okay, go to next step. If stop lamp switch is faulty, replace stop lamp switch.
- No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
