Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Nissan Pathfinder. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition off. Check vacuum hoses between SCV solenoid, swirl control vacuum check switch and SCV actuator for blockage or improper connection. See VACUUM DIAGRAMS article. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST . If no problem is found, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect SC vacuum check switch 2-pin harness connector. See Figure. Check continuity between ground and SC vacuum check switch harness connector terminal No. 2 (Black wire). See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Also, check circuit for short to voltage. If problem is found, go to next step. If no problem is found, go to step  4.
  3. Check following:
    • Check for poor, loose, corroded or damaged terminal connections in in-line harness connectors E1 AND M1. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL.
    • Check for poor, loose, corroded or damaged terminal connections in in-line harness connectors M32 and F23.
    • Check for poor, loose, corroded or damaged terminal connections in in-line harness connectors M33 and F22.
    • Check for poor, loose, corroded or damaged terminal connections in joint harness connector F204.
    • Check for open in circuit between ECM and SC vacuum check switch.
    • Check for open in circuit between TCM and SC vacuum check switch.
If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM 116-pin harness connector. For ECM location, see Figure. Check continuity of White/Black wire (changes to White/Blue) between SC vacuum check switch harness connector terminal No. 1 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 59. See Figure. Continuity should exist. Also, check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair circuit as necessary. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
  5. CAUTION: DO NOT use ECM ground terminals when measuring voltage.
  6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect vacuum hose from SC vacuum check switch. See Figure. Backprobing at ECM, measure voltage between ground and ECM terminal No. 59 (White/Black wire). See Figure. Using a hand vacuum pump, apply specified amount of vacuum to SC vacuum check switch. See SWIRL CONTROL VACUUM CHECK SWITCH VOLTAGE  table. If voltage is as specified and CONSULT-II is available, go to next step. If voltage is as specified and CONSULT-II is not available, go to step  7. If voltage is not as specified, replace SC vacuum check switch. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
SWIRL CONTROL VACUUM CHECK SWITCH VOLTAGE

Vacuum - in. Hg (kPa) Volts
More than 5.91 (20.0) Engine Ground
5.91-6.77 (20.0-23.0) Engine Ground Or About 4.8 Volts
    Less Than 6.77 (23.0) About 4.8 Volts
  7. Connect any disconnected harness connectors. Start engine. Disconnect SCV actuator vacuum hose. Select SWIRL CONT SOL/V in ACTIVE TEST mode with CONSULT-II. Touch ON and OFF on CONSULT-II. Vacuum should exist when SWIRL CONT SOL/V is On, and no vacuum should exist when SWIRL CONT SOL/V is Off. SCV on-to-off operation should take less than one second. If vacuum is as specified, go to step  8. If vacuum is not as specified, replace intake manifold collector. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
  8. Connect any disconnected harness connectors. Remove vacuum hose between SCV solenoid and SCV actuator. Start engine and let it idle. Using fused jumper wires, apply battery voltage between SCV solenoid terminals. When voltage is applied, vacuum should flow through SCV solenoid. When jumper wires are removed, vacuum should not flow. SCV on to off operation should take less than one second. If vacuum is as specified, go to step  8. If vacuum is not as specified, replace intake manifold collector. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
  9. No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
